Life and death in the garden/ Leben und Sterben im Garten

Fluttering, fleeting, flimsy - and broken (hurt? crippled?) butterfly

Swallowtial – Schwalbenschwanz – Papilio machaon
but there was also a complete one ...

...and suddenly there was movement between the leaves

Can you see it? I have marked both with a red arrow... the butterfly at the bottom left, and up on the right...

Europaische Gottesanbeterin - European Mantis - Mantis religiosa
... eine Gottesanbeterin!
... a European Mantis!

Fortunately the butterflies were faster!

And then I saw something else special... no, it was not a colibri ;-)...

...but another butterfly, a Hummingbird Hawk-moth!

Later I found this:
Spätr fand ich dan dies:

I think it might be the wings of some kind of grasshopper

and the one responsible for this:
und die Verursacherin:

Oh, and by the way, this is not my garden.

Viecher und Bücher/ Beasts and Books

Beasts and books - this could also be the headline about my life. But at the moment even more so, because we are again animal-sitting in Portugal (here is a link to my former posts) while Anna from Seattle is taking care of Moritz and Leoni.

Pancho and Sinsa the dogs, Fluffy and Mimi the cats were already here the last times, the horse Golosa is now alone, but the old donkeys Burra and Pepita now have two younger companions: Viola and Oskar. Photos will follow...

But I can show photos of some other beasts I have seen today... they are not perfect, but I am still quite proud... inhabitants of this ruin:

Rhinolophus spec.
The Greater Horseshoe Bat - great is rather relative with about 8 cm body length

The Island of lost Maps habe ich gerade ausgelesen und jetzt suche ich mir was neues....
And what about books? I just finished The Island of lost Maps and now I 'll find myself something new...

Barton-upon-Humber

Two days ago I read in the newspaper (The Grimsby Telegraph): "Craft village officially open to the public - William Blyth, The Old Tile Works ... is one of the last tile factories in Europe of its kind."
The tiles they are making there are roof tiles. Of course I had to go there!
Took the bus to Barton and asked my way to Far Ings Lane. At a taxi office, a woman said: Lets see whether I can google you a map - and she printed me a paper with the route.
The Tile Works are just below the Humber bridge.

What was more difficult to see, was the making of the roof tiles. The real factory is closed to the public and I could just get a glimpse over the fence and see the emptying of the kiln.

The fences, by the way, are all made from tiles :-)
Behind it you see the old mill house, where the clay was processed. It is not brought there by train any more.

The pressed raw tiles have to dry in one of 22 drying sheds, before they are finally fired with a temperature of 1000 C.

Here you can see the old fashioned type, flat tiles in the drying shed.

There were 13 tile and brick maker factories in Barton and this one is the only that survived.

Getting to Hull

(Weiter unten auf deutsch)
Today I wanted to travel to Hull - the city is actually called Kingston-upon-Hull:  the Hull is a river that flows into the Humber.
I had to take a train to Barton-upon-Humber...

... but when I got to Ulceby train station I was told it is cancelled. Fortunately there was a bus going. And I arrived in time to catch the next bus to Hull over the "magnificent" Humber Bridge. I definitely would have preferred a ferry! especially as we got stuck in a traffic jam and it took ONE HOUR to cross the bridge. It would have been faster to walk over it... (see BBC news)

Finally we arrived and I went to the Maritime Museum. The former Dock Offices building was built by Christopher Wray in 1871 and converted into a museum in 1975.

Afterwards I had time to visit an old light ship, the SPURN...

So long

Nachtrag: fast vergessen:

  • Handgepäck-Köfferchen 2250 g
Nun, ich glaube, ich werde auf das Lesebuch (Philip Hoare: Leviathan or, The Whale) verzichten und hoffen, dass es in dem haushalt auch was zu lesen gibt...

Coming home

Tomorrow evening I'll be back home. There's a lot to tell!

Norman Rockwell: Returning from Camp

Finally: The cats!

Now I will finally introduce you to my "bosses":

DIDA is the boss of the lot. She is the one that comes to my room to tell me, that its time for breakfast. And every day she argues with me, telling me: but Mummy used to give me more than that! And I invariably reply: no, look what Mummy wrote on the list! ...Ok, have some little bits more...

Next on the feeding list is Moritz - no WHISKY.

He was a bit shy the first days, but now he sometimes even honours me with his presence in the same room... - like last night, when he tried to squeeze into my camera-bag:

SIMBA is the king of the patios and the garden, a real lion:

HUZZY is not seen unless there is food! And then I have to lock her on the balcony, until all the other dishes are empty.

Finally there is little CHUCHU. The newest addition to the "family". As a former street-cat, she is able to defend herself against Simba, but has also found out, that close to me she will not be harmed.

So I will show you some pictures:

Tiles and vultures and five cats

You might have guessed: I am cat-sitting again! This time it is not very far from home, in Jimena de la Frontera. I arrived by train on saturday evening, after a week of travelling with some friends from Germany. Sorry I have no time to tell you about the Sherry-bodega-Tour in Jerez, my new paprika-tin bought in Cadiz, the hundreds of pillars and arches in the mezquita of Cordoba, the flowers of El Torcal and two new elongated coins (this is the official name for the flattened souvenir cents)...
and since I don`t have wifi here, I am sitting at my host`s computer and am not sure how to include photos: so this will be a rather dull post.
This village is so steep, there are hand-rails at some of the sidewalks. And after two days of walking I`ve got sore muscles already. But it was worth it! And by the end of those two weeks I will be really fit! - I hope:-)
Many of the houses on the main street - calle Sevilla - have still beautiful old cement tiles in the entrance - and all of them are different! It is amazing!
Today I went up to the castle. Every sensible Andalusian village has to have a Moorish castle, this time as often built on Roman ruins. Views overlooking the Parque Natural de los Alcornocales down to Gibraltar. And overhead I saw some vultures circeling - and maybe an eagle too! From there I wandered down again on a path which lead to the "Jardin ethnobotanico". There was not much left of a garden, but everything is flowering at the moment, something yellow I didn`t know, dark purple lavender, light pink wild roses and further down, close to the rio Hozgarganta, dark pink oleander - not shrubs, but trees!
Then in the evening, cat-feeding time. I have a list of who gets how much and where its dish is... Today even the shyest of the cats, a black-and-white one called Whisky, came for feeding time... to be continued, maybe with photos..

Books, books, books...

Here I am not only gifted with a marvellous nature, but also have a heap of books at my disposal - and since I sorted them when I was here last time, I even know what is there!

There are two shelves going around the staircase. This picture doesn't really show the amount; the lower rows are stacked from both sides and there is another bookshelf in the other corner of the room.
I have just looked in my book collector programme at what I read here, and decided the New Year is a good time for a review of last year's books. I have hardly read anything at home, but a lot on my animal-sits.

  • Paul Theroux: The Pillars of Hercules ***A journalist travels around the Mediterranean
  • Chris Stewart: Driving Over Lemons - An optimist in Andalucía **** Ex-Genesis drummer buys a farm in the Alpujarras  - a patch of mountain studded with olive, almond and lemon groves, sited on the wrong side of a river, with no access road, water supply or electricity.
  • Karel Capek: War with the Newts *****!!! Satirical science-fiction written in 1936, how a race of intelligent newts dominate the world
  • Alan Bennett: The Uncommon Reader **** The Queen discovers the joys of reading
  • Michael Allin: Zarafa: A Giraffe's True Story ***** In 1826 the viceroy of Egypt presents a giraffe as present to the French king Charles X. It is shipped down the Nile, across the mediterranean and then lead walking from Marseille to Paris
  • Matthew Flinders: A biographical tribute to the memory of Trim **** The story of a brave, seafaring cat who, in the company of Matthew Flinders, circumnavigated the globe in the years 1799-1804
  • Daniel Glattauer: Gut gegen Nordwind ***** intelligente Liebesgeschichte in schönen Worten
  • David Safier: Mieses Karma ** leichte, dämliche Unterhaltung

  • Tony Hawks: Round Ireland With a Fridge *** Nice to read, but since he was covered by a radio series, that reported his travels daily, it wasn't really hitchiking any more.
  • Eric Newby: The Last Grain Race ***** Sailed around the world in 1938 on 4-mast barque Moshulu, via Cape of Good Hope to Australia, via Cape Hoorn back.

Frost and Fire - Rime and Rhyme

Yesterday morning it was really cold, when I went for my morning walk and there was frozen dew - I had to look up the word: rime - on the ground.

A very poetic word, I find, that matches the delicacy of this ice.

In the evening we had the fire going and a line from a poem sprang to mind:

Ah, distinctly I remember
it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember
wrought its ghost upon the floor.....

Dear readers, this time I won´t tell you where it is from, I think you all know, or? tell me...

And here is a proof of our cosy evenings - and the first time, that the two cat-enemies are quietly together in one room!
